If you’ve started researching wedding help, you’ve probably landed on the same question a lot of couples do: full-service planner vs. day-of coordinator — what’s actually the difference? These terms (along with “month-of coordinator”) get used almost interchangeably online, but they represent very different levels of service, and knowing the difference before you start reaching out to vendors will save you time, money, and a lot of confusion.
A full-service planner is involved from the very beginning of your engagement. They help you build your budget, find and book your venue, source and vet vendors, manage contracts, design the overall look and feel of your day, and attend meetings and walk-throughs with you along the way. If you want a true partner guiding every decision from day one, this is the role built for that.
A day-of coordinator (sometimes marketed as “month-of,” since most start a few weeks out) steps in once your planning is mostly done. Their job is to take everything you’ve already booked and organized and execute it flawlessly on the actual day. That means building a detailed timeline, confirming details with every vendor, running the rehearsal, managing setup and breakdown, and handling anything that comes up in real time — so you, your family, and your wedding party can actually be present instead of managing logistics.

If the idea of planning your own wedding feels exciting and you mostly want backup for execution, a day-of coordinator is likely enough. If the planning process itself feels overwhelming, or you don’t have the time or desire to manage a dozen vendor relationships yourself, a full-service planner is worth the investment. Professional organizations like the Wedding International Professionals Association set industry standards for exactly these roles, which is a good sign this distinction matters beyond just marketing language.
Either way, one thing is non-negotiable: don’t assume your venue’s on-site coordinator covers this role. Venue coordinators work for the venue, not for you — and their job stops at the building’s walls.
